Subject: Invitation to an All Academy Theme Interactive Workshop at upcoming Academy of Management meetings
Dear Colleagues:

· Would you like to learn how words and the language we use can either foster or hinder inclusion of others (and ourselves)?
· Are you interested in conversing with fellow AOM members about how to foster inclusion in the Academy and the institutions in which you work?
Then, please put the “Language of Inclusion and Exclusion in the AOM: An Interactive Workshop on the Power of Words” on your customized program for Philadelphia. The session will be held on Sunday August 3rd in the Pennsylvania Convention Center, Room 120A from 11:15 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.
The goal of this session is to create an interactive dialogue to foster understanding of the ways in which language and its usage can create inclusion or exclusion.
The workshop will be led by myself, Stella Nkomo, and Ilene Wasserman, all members of the Diversity and Inclusion Theme Committee of the Academy, which is the sponsor of this event. Joining us are three outstanding panelists: Paul Adler, President-Elect of the Academy; Linda Putnam, well known for her work on conflict management, discourse, and gender in organizations and a former member of the Academy’s Board of Governors, and Ian Williamson, founding President of the Management Faculty of Color Association (MFCA), and a recipient of various awards from the Academy of Management, including its Best Practices Mentoring Award. Panelists and participants in this very interactive workshop will share their share personal experiences and perspectives regarding the power of language to create experiences of inclusion or exclusion in the Academy of Management. This event will be very engaging and involve audience participation and learning.
