    2023 Industry Studies Association
    Annual Conference

    May 31 - June 2, 2023

The Fisher College of Business, The Ohio State University

    Colleagues,

Did you not quite make the deadline for AoM full-paper submission? Or, do you want to get two conferences for that same paper? Either way (or even if you are not going to AoM), please consider submitting an ABSTRACT to the Industry Studies Association (ISA) ISA Columbus meeting, to be held May 31-June 2, 2023.

Since our Wharton conference last year, American industrial policy has taken center stage. The passage of the CHIPS and Science Act and the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 has brought the most attention to U.S. industrial and research policy creation, collaboration and coordination since the rise of Japan more than four decades ago. Suitably, our theme this year is Reconceptualizing Competition: Nation, Region, Firm and Individual and the ISA, with its long standing, multi-disciplinary lens is well-positioned to continue its outsized influence on existing and future U.S. and global policy analysis and decision-making.

Intentional or not, the regulatory and market environments in all industries have recently come under significant political and geopolitical pressures. Whether health care, semiconductors, energy, finance, transportation, or mobility to name a few, competition in markets, regions and nations has been and will continue to be reshaped significantly. Equally, the arrival of OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot last month revitalizes discussions around the future of work and the role of innovation in artificial intelligence.

What better place to present, learn and discuss these issues than the ISA's Columbus conference. Ohio has the third largest manufacturing workforce in the U.S., Intel is building a $20 billion fab and Honda and LG have committed $4 billion to new electric vehicle and battery production facilities in state. The workforce demands will be substantial and our plenaries and special sessions include the public-private entity JobsOhio and Ohio State's BRIGHT program; two facets of the region's job creation, workforce training and economic development engines. Other ISA plenaries will examine the increasingly-scrutinized role of Pharmacy Benefits Managers (PBMs) in healthcare, industrial policy writ large, and others still under design. We will also have tours to the oldest Japanese automobile plant in the United States (Honda, built near Columbus in 1982) and a large generics pharmaceutical manufacturer.

The ISA Columbus conference will connect multiple levels of analysis in an unparalleled environment of scholars, policymakers, and practitioners. Please join us at the end of May and submit your papers and panels as soon as possible and no later than January 20th.

We wish you a healthy and happy start to the new year, and look forward to seeing you in Columbus.
