    Submit Your Proposal Today!

Industry Studies Association Annual Conference - Boston

    Dear Colleagues,

Please see the below call for papers for the 2020 Industry Studies Association conference at the MIT Samberg Conference Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts, June 3-5, 2020.

I am particularly excited for this year's conference. While the conference always has engaging and interesting sessions, this year the special sessions are exceptional.

I am most excited for the session with the author of Bottle of Lies, Katherine Eban. She and the panel will provide a first-person summary of the gross non-compliance uncovered in global drug manufacturing, based on years of investigative reporting. We will extend the discussion to the broader question of how norms are established, and the extent to which they can be universally applied across the globe.

The conference location, Cambridge, provides an ideal backdrop for another exciting special session the biotech industry. Cambridge is a global biotech cluster, and we are assembling a panel to discuss the extremely salient issue of pricing and innovation. Rena Conti from Boston University will moderate this discussion with a distinguished panel of practitioners.

These are but two of the amazing sessions we have planned. Please see below for more.

If you have never attended an Industry Studies Association conference, I strongly encourage you to do so. The conference attracts top scholars from economics, public policy, and various business school disciplines. These scholars are interested in real challenges faced by industry and policy-makers. The scholars have a deep understanding of the industry they study, and are focused on large problems.

I hope to see you in Cambridge in June!

    Call for Papers

Just two weeks to go before submissions are due for the 2020 ISA Annual conference! Please send your paper abstracts and panel proposals for our annual conference, held next year on June 3-5, 2020 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Samberg Conference Center, near Boston, MA.

Boston is known as The City of Notions, The Cradle of Liberty, The Athens of America, and America's Walking City, and Beantown - to name just a new of its nicknames. Boston has one of the healthiest and most diversified economics in the U.S., with strength in technology and innovation (e.g., robotics, artificial intelligence, etc.) that is transforming work in diverse industries such as education, health care, financial services, and manufacturing. This year's conference theme, Work of the Future, was chosen with that in mind.

Papers and panels that address the work of the future in any regard are encouraged but not required. We welcome any and all research that fits under the broad umbrella of industry studies. ISA was founded to encourage "industry studies" in which researchers pursue contextual knowledge of industry, firm, and workplace in order to inform research questions, guide data collection, motivate multi-method analysis, and stimulate interpretations that consider both generalizability and context-contingent lessons.

We hope that you will join us at next June's conference. We have several conference additions and highlights this year, which you can learn about here: https://www.industrystudies.org/conference-highlights. For many of us, it is our favorite conference - small and personal, drawing people from  many disciplines who share a passion for phenomenon-driven research and for going out into the field to speak with people, observe, and gather primary data.

Check out the call for papers for further information, it is attached to this email and can also be found on our website: https://www.industrystudies.org/call-for-papers. One great way to leverage the riches available at an ISA conference is to convene a panel whose members reflect different perspectives on a given topic or theme. The panel designs each year are varied, so feel free to be creative - look at a single question across multiple industries; compare and contrast the critical issues affecting a single industry; or find researchers united by a method who are applying it in diverse industry settings.

Please feel free to share this email with colleagues doing industry studies. Invite a friend to submit a paper or panel alongside you!

The submission deadline is Friday, January 17, 2020.
